The floods and their aftermath caused much damage and distress throughout the Berwick upon Tweed community.

Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, Sir Alan Beith has today warned the government that there is still a lot to do if communities such as Rothbury in Northumberland are to feel safe from the risk of flooding.

His comments come on the day of the government's long awaited response to Sir Michael Pitt's review of the 2007 summer floods which caused havoc in much of England. Sir Michael published his review in December making 92 recommendations on how to improve the UK's preparations, management and response to severe flooding.

Environment secretary Hilary Benn has told worried homeowners that the government remains determined to make the country better able to anticipate and deal with the impacts of flooding.

Sir Alan said:

"There's an enormous amount to be done in safeguarding communities in Northumberland from potential future flooding. The momentum of planning and investment must be maintained. The memory of recent floods is still fresh in people's minds."
