Beith secures Westminster debate on Northumberland floods5.30.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 17th Oct 2008
Berwick's Liberal Democrat MP Sir Alan Beith has secured a debate in Parliament on the impact of the severe floods which hit Northumberland early in September. Sir Alan Beith said "I will be raising issues surrounding the problems with warning systems for rivers including the Coquet and the Wansbeck, the massive cost of repairs and reconstruction and the problems stemming from the Bellwin formula which limits the amount of compensation local councils can receive from central government. People in Rothbury and Morpeth, and many other villages and settlements throughout the Berwick upon Tweed constituency, have been hard hit by the floods and their aftermath. "The economic cost to local businesses and farmers will be enormous and I am very concerned about the long term impact on Northumberland's economy. I also hope to raise the problems encountered by the Harbour Commissioners at Amble, where the harbour wall has been undermined by the force of the water. "We are all extremely glad that no lives were lost and no serious injuries inflicted during the floods, and are grateful to the tremendous effort of all involved in helping, but the impact felt by people who have had to leave their homes - some of whom have lost everything - cannot be underestimated." The debate is scheduled for the evening of Monday 20 October 2008.
