Berwick's MP Alan Beith has been nominated for a top award organised by The House Magazine, a weekly publication for Westminster and all those with an interest in politics, policy and Parliament.

The annual House Magazine Parliamentary Awards are eagerly awaited as parliament's most prestigious celebration of the hard work and tireless efforts of MPs and peers. Alan Beith has been nominated for the Parliamentary Award, which is presented to a Member of either the House of Commons or the House of Lords who, during his or her parliamentary career, has consistently been recognised as an outstanding Member of, and ambassador for, Parliament. The other nominees for this year's award are Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke QC MP and Rt Hon Sir Gerald Kaufmann MP.

Alan Beith said

"It is a great honour to have been nominated for this award. I have always made it my priority to work for the people of the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency at Westminster, but have been fortunate to visit many other parts of the United Kingdom and travel overseas through my work on various select committees, especially more recently as Chairman of the Justice Committee, representing Parliament."

The House Magazine is managed by a cross-party editorial team of MPs and overseen by a panel of senior parliamentarians, the publication contains articles and features by some of the most senior politicians, journalists and political commentators. The House Magazine serves to connect others - Brussels, the Scottish Parliament, Welsh Assembly Northern Ireland Assembly, private citizens, industry, trade unions, academia, and local government - with the Westminster world. Regular features allow the opportunity for in-depth coverage on key policy issues providing a valuable resource for understanding and influencing the debate. The magazine is seen both as an indispensable guide and integral part of Westminster life and is independently identified as the most read weekly publication within the Palace of Westminster.

The recipient of the award will be announced on 18 June 2008. Last year the award went to Geoffrey Howe, Baron Howe of Aberavon, CH, PC, QC, and the other nominees were Gwyneth Dunwoody MP and Rt Hon Jack Straw QC MP.
