Government action on housing for key workers won't solve housing crisis, warns Beith

11.00.00am GMT Tue 15th Jan 2008

Alan Beith, Lib Dem MP for Berwick, has warned that the Government's scheme to help key workers get on the housing ladder will not solve the serious shortage of affordable housing in north and mid Northumberland.

Mr Beith said

"Until the restrictions on house building imposed by the Regional Spatial Strategy are clearly removed, the serious obstacles to getting the amount of affordable housing which we need will remain in place.

"I am continuing to push for more freedom for house building in our area, as although the number of new homes which can be built each year has been increased in the Regional Spatial Strategy, it is still far fewer than the amount needed."

Mr Beith has tabled a Parliamentary Question asking for clarification over the provisions of the Housing Green paper as this may have lead to an easing of the restrictions.
