Beith forces debate on state of school buildings

10.30.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 19th Oct 2007

Lib Dem MP Alan Beith has secured an Adjournment Debate on the state of school buildings and school reorganisation in the Berwick-upon-Tweed Constituency.

Mr Beith will address the House of Commons on Tuesday 23 October. It is hoped that the Minister for Schools, Jim Knight, will respond for the Government.

Mr Knight visited Northumberland last year and promised to make a return trip to see for himself the state of the buildings at the Duchess Community High School in Alnwick, but despite repeated reminders has not committed himself to a date.

Alan Beith said

"The students and staff at the Duchess High School work together to produce excellent results in what can only be described as appalling conditions. Alnwick needs new school buildings and cannot wait another 10 years for funding."
