Beith still has concerns over out-of-hours GP cover

9.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 2nd Oct 2007

Berwick MP Alan Beith has voiced renewed concerns over access to GPs in rural Northumberland.

Mr Beith made his comments as a review of the effectiveness of the service was announced. He said

"The poor handling of the changes to GP contracts three years ago has cost the government around £1.8 billion more than originally estimated.

"Not only are taxpayers paying huge prices but in rural areas like Northumberland we have had to accept much reduced availability of doctors outside surgery hours.

"I remain worried, particularly about the situation where the only doctor on duty after midnight may be on Tyneside when he or she is needed in Berwick or Alnwick."

Thanks to Alan's campaigning, there is now a GP stationed at Berwick Infirmary and one at Alnwick Infirmary between 6pm and midnight during the week, and for most of the weekend, but the night hours are still a concern.

Alan added

"There may be times when people feel they cannot wait or take a chance on the GP being available and end up calling an ambulance. I will continue to keep a close eye on this situation."
