Beith calls on DEFRA to help farmers after latest Foot and Mouth crisis11.17.00am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 18th Sep 2007 Alan Beith, Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick upon Tweed, has called on DEFRA to bring forward Single Farm Payments for the coming financial year to help farmers affected by the latest wave of foot and mouth outbreaks in England. Mr Beith said
"Even though we are hundreds of miles away from the latest outbreaks of foot and mouth disease, local farmers are still being badly affected by the restrictions on movements of livestock and additional costs such as vet inspection fees, buying in more food and disinfectant, and so on. "I've asked the ministers at DEFRA to look at giving farmers an advance payment from the Single Farm Payment from the coming round, to help them through these difficulties. "Many farmers are still feeling the effects of the delays in paying the last batch of Single Farm Payments and the poor management of the Rural Payments Agency. The Government should act now to help our agricultural sector on which so many jobs in our area depend."
