Beith - Delay on unitary government decision means "period of uncertainty" for Northumberland

Alan Beith, Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, has warned that the Government's failure to make a decision on the proposals for unitary government in Northumberland could lead to a long period of uncertainty, particularly for those who work for the county and district councils.

Alan Beith said

"The question of a single unitary authority for Northumberland was put to the electorate in the 2004 referendum, and was rejected. The six district councils and the four MPs in Northumberland are all backing the bid for two unitary authorities, one for the rural areas and one for the urban south-east.

"I fear that extending the period of consultation to 22 June will mean a time of uncertainty for our councils, which is hard on those employed by the various councils."
