Local residents are hoping that belford railway station can be re-opened - but need a platform for joining and leaving the trains.

Berwick MP Alan Beith has spoken in the House of Commons about plans to re-open Belford railway station, and has asked the Under-Secretary of State for Transport to come to Belford to help the plans move forward.

Mr Beith said

"If the Minister tried to come to Belford, he would not be able to get off the train. It stops there twice a day, but the building of a platform has been obstructed by bureaucracy.

"Can the Minister not knock some heads together and secure some progress? People in and around Belford want to use the trains but are prevented. With the cost of motoring rising, and concerns about the environmental impact of private car use, it makes sense to enable more use of public transport."

Alan Beith added,

"The long-running saga of the Belford railway platform - or lack of it - must be addressed. The proposals for the new platform have been put forward twice but have been obstructed. I will continue to work with Ministers and others to see how we can make progress on this development."
