Beith tackles Prime Minister over pressure on prison officers

12.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 12th Feb 2007

Berwick MP Alan Beith has spoken to the Prime Minister about the massive problems in Britain's prisons and the pressures being endured by prison officers.

In a meeting of the Liaison Committee, Alan Beith said that our prisons are becoming "pressure cookers of violence, increasingly dangerous for prison officers and dangerous for prisoners, disgorging prisoners with a huge tendency to reoffend." He asked the Prime Minister what action, if any, the government was planning to take to ease the situation.

Speaking after the meeting, Alan Beith said

"The Prime Minister did not really answer the question put to him. The Labour government has made a great deal out of being 'tough on crime' but facilities and staff have not been supported. Our prisons are full to breaking point and those who work with offenders need much more support."
