Minister takes up case following Beith's calls for rail transport to be re-instated for college students10.00.00am GMT Tue 28th Nov 2006 Following Berwick MP Alan Beith's intervention, Rt. Hon. Alan Johnson MP, Minister of State for Education, has said he will write to the Chief Executive of Northumberland County Council over the scrapping of subsidised rail travel to Newcastle College for students from the Berwick Borough. Alan Beith says "I have heard from many constituents following the County Council's decision to end the provision of subsidised rail travel for Berwick students travelling to Newcastle College. After I took this up with the Department of Education, I received a letter from the Minister of State saying he would also be looking into this and thanking me for bringing it to his attention. "I understand that the County Council have made some exceptions for students who suffer from severe travel sickness, and some courses, but I hope they will reconsider this decision which is causing severe strain for youngsters who aware enduring up to 4 hours on a bus each day, just to continue their studies."
