Rt. Hon. Sir Alan Beith MP

Member of Parliament for Berwick Upon Tweed

Alan Beith

Fighting for a better deal for the Berwick upon Tweed constituency is my top priority.

As the MP for Berwick upon Tweed, listening to people and hearing about their views and concerns is extremely important to me, and to my team based in Westminster and the Constituency Office in Alnwick.

There is much to be proud of in our area but there is also plenty of work still to be done.

Recent proposals to change the rail timetable have caused a great deal of concern for the many residents who rely on our rail services to get to work, school, college and university, as well as leisure travellers. I have been having a series of meetings with Government Ministers and rail bosses and am fighting hard to ensure that changes do not lead to a loss of services.

I'm keeping up the pressure on the Ministry of Defence to ensure we have round-the-clock Search and Rescue cover from RAF Boulmer. Many more lives could have been lost in Cockermouth if Boulmer (and other bases) had not had an operational crew on 24 hour duty when the flooding happened, and I want to ensure we keep that cover for when emergencies like the Cockernmouth floods happen, as they do from time to time.

Thanks to my campaign, Northumberland County Council has been permitted to make an "exceptional case" for funding for new school buildings for the split site Duchess's Community High School in Alnwick. I am doing everything I can to ensure this is a successful bid. The students and staff work extremely hard and produce such good results and I am proud of their achievements.

We need to finish dualling the A1, to improve safety and to help the region's economy.

Since I was first elected, there have been major improvements to the A1 between Morpeth and the Scottish border - but there are still dangerous stretches on the road and I am determined to get the job of dualling the A1 finished.

We have been let down by broken promises from both Conservative and Labour governments.

The dualling of the A1 has cross-party support throughout Northumberland aand the north east and people from all parties have worked together on this issue over the years. I hope this cross-party consensus will continue and we can all work together to get a safer road and a stronger infrastructure for our economy.

As well as big issues like these, I'm always available to help with individual problems.

If you want to get in touch, to raise a problem or let me have your views, I am always interested in hearing from you. Please remember to include your name and address. If you would like to meet in person, please come along to a surgery - I hold these in Berwick and Alnwick every month and at various times in other parts of the constituency.

is meeting the Rail Minister again over proposed changes to the train timetable at Alnmouth, Berwick and Morpeth - we must keep our essential services and see an overall improvement, not a worsening, of the service.
