Welcome to my web site.
My mailbag and inbox have been very full lately with so many people getting in touch to share their concerns over the proposed cuts to GPs' budgets.
Health services provided by our GPs, practice and community nurses are very highly valued in our rural area. Because we live in a rural, sparsely populated part of England, we have special needs when it comes to health services, particularly because of the large distances which often have to be travelled to access those services. We depend heavily on our GP practices, with many offering services which would be provided by a hospital in an urban area like Tyneside.
I've been working with health professionals, the Northumberland Care Trust which finances GP services, and the Strategic Health Authority to ensure that we don't lose our vital services. I've raised this worrying stuation in Parliament.
Now I'm waiting to see if my specific concerns about the funding for GP practices have been met in the revised offers now being considered by the practices.
I promise I will keep fighting for our health services.
If you would like to come and meet me, or raise any issues, I hold regular surgeries in Alnwick and Berwick every month, and in other towns and villages at various times. You can find details by following this link:

It's always good to hear from people in and around the constituency, and from further afield. Please send me your comments and feedback, and suggestions for what you would like to see on the site.

Thousands hit by Labour's tax grab, warns Beith
Tue 15th Apr 2008
Alan Beith, MP for Berwick upon Tweed, has slammed the Government's abolition of the 10p income tax band, which has hit people on lower incomes disproportionately hard. On 6th April, Labour doubled the starting rate of income tax from 10p to 20p in the pound. Previously, a 10p rate was paid on the first £2230 of taxable income. As a result, instead of taking £223 in income tax on this portion of people's wages, Gordon Brown's government is taking £446. For those on higher incomes, this is offset by a cut in the standard rate of income tax from 22p to 20p in the pound.
